As the air turns crisp and sweaters become a necessity, comfort becomes more of a priority. With the outbreak of the novel coronavirus and correlating quarantine, fashion for the sake of fashion seems to have taken a backseat, with practicality and ease taking the wheel. With much of the nation working from home, slippers, sweatpants and athleisure are a new standard of luxury. Heels are out, Uggs are in. Just ask Telfar Clemens and Molly Goddard, the brand’s most recent fashion collaborators.
While not particularly stylish, the phenomenon of the Ugg boot can be traced back to the early aughts. Questionable in taste, the practicality and unrivaled comfort of Uggs cannot be disputed. Like putting your foot in a cozy cloud, the ironically fashionable footwear has been a heated subject of debate over the last decade.
Rethought, reimagined, and revamped through multiple designer collaborations, Ugg has seen a number of high-end renditions come its way. Jeremy Scott issued an early aughts-inspired Ugg capsule in 2017, Y/Project followed with a thigh-high interpretation of the chunky sheepskin boots, BAPE put a streetwear spin on them, and, last year, Eckhaus Latta and Heron Preston came out with undeniably cool capsules. Now, Telfar and Molly Goddard are both releasing collaborative collections to drop in 2021.
First to announce its upcoming capsule, genderless label Telfar and Ugg launched a celebratory series titled Feel You to emphasize individual style, placing 30 international artists, creatives, and activists on a platform. While the footwear has yet to be revealed, Clemens, the founder and namesake of Telfar, has put unofficial Telfar Uggs on the runway in the past, already proving the unlikely symbiosis of the brands.
Right off the heels (or rather, the soft Treadlite soles) of its Telfar collaboration announcement, Ugg unveiled yet another creative union. Ugg and British designer Molly Goddard revealed their collaboration at the British designer’s Spring/Summer 2021 showing during London Fashion Week. With burgundy, sea-foam, and emerald greens, the sheepskin boot brand received the Goddard treatment, with bold shaggy lamb hair slippers and playful exaggerated platform mules. The Molly Goddard x Ugg collection will be released in March of 2021. “We wanted to make something bold and colorful, to play with the Ugg DNA,” Goddard said. “The outcome are shoes that are wearable, fun, with a much-needed sense of humor, given the times…and I think still very elegant!”
