The Council of Fashion Designers of America announced its nominees for its 2o2o Fashion Awards today. Originally, the Awards were scheduled for June 8, but, like many fashion world events, were unable to proceed as normal due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In May, the CFDA announced its plans to reschedule the awards, but the organization ultimately made the decision to go digital. The winners’ names will be released on Monday, September 14, on the CFDA’s website and social media channels. The digital awards will kick off an exciting but shortened New York Fashion Week, which will run for three days.

“In this time of unprecedented challenge and change for our industry, we feel very strongly that it is important to recognize the nominees representing the best of fashion creativity,” said CFDA chairman Tom Ford.

By eschewing the awards ceremony, the CFDA aims to prioritize programming to support designers amidst the pandemic. These efforts include “next generation scholarships and making important changes to bring racial equity to the fashion industry,” according to CFDA President and Chief Executive Officer Steven Kolb. The latter remains a site for improvement in the industry, and even among the 2020 Fashion Awards nominees, only two designers nominated for top American Awards–Telfar Clemens and Kerby Jean-Raymond–are people of color.

The Fashion Awards will also forgo naming honorees (such as Fashion Icon, Positive Change, Founder’s, Media, Lifetime Achievement or International awards) this year, and instead focus solely on honoring designers and members of the fashion community. Awards will be given for American Women’s and Menswear Designers of the Year, American Accessories Designer of the Year, American Emerging Designer of the Year, as well as two new categories: Global Women’s and Men’s Designer of the Year.
