On June 9, Gucci relaunched its sustainability platform Gucci Equilibrium along with an accompanying Instagram account that documents the brand’s commitments to an environmentally conscious and ethical future. The brand also published its 2019 Environmental Profit and Loss (EP&L) report, which revealed that Gucci has greatly reduced material and energy waste year-over-year.
Though Gucci previously launched Equilibrium in 2018, the platform’s relaunch “aims to inspire and unify a community of voices to join the conversations that are increasingly critical in today’s world.”
According to Gucci CEO Marco Bizzarri, these critical conversations go beyond environmental impacts. “Gucci is driven by the issues that are fundamentally influencing and creating our collective future,” he said. “It is paramount that we build this future to be more equitable, where injustice and discrimination in all their forms are not allowed to prevail. In light of current events, our unwavering commitment to combat racism and fight for equality is now even stronger.”
Gucci Equilibrium is “defined by the two pillars, People and Planet.” The initiative’s website includes an explanation of Gucci’s recent pledge to “combat racism” and a history of the company’s diversity, inclusion, and equality efforts. The website also shared the brand’s efforts to empower local communities. The Gucci Changemakers fund will provide million a year to local, community-focused non-profits for the next five years. In 2020, 16 non-profits including the ACLU of Louisiana, the Black AIDS Institute, and Slay TV received funding.
For its sustainability efforts over the past year, Gucci has incorporated more recycled raw materials and organic fibers into clothing, used only ethical gold for jewelry, and implemented new manufacturing processes. Its Gucci Scrap-less and Gucci-up initiatives have helped in this progress, reducing water and chemical use and minimizing the leather scraps in its luxury production. The brand is also employing sustainable energy. At the end of 2019, renewable energy powered 83 percent of Gucci’s stores, offices, warehouses and factories. The brand is aiming to get that number up to 100 by the end of this year.
Further, the relaunched platform states that it hopes to enact systemic change by inspiring other companies and leaders to do better. Gucci has said that it hopes to create opportunities and provide a platform for historically underrepresented talent, to empower people with a scholarship fund, and to call for climate leadership and action across different business sectors.
