Dior Unveils ‘Designer of Dreams’ Exhibition Online

As the world continues to practice social distancing and self-isolation, Dior has brought its Christian Dior: Designer of Dreams exhibition online to provide a much needed cultural respite. Featuring a virtual tour, viewers are able to discover the luxury house’s most inspired designs from the comfort of their homes.

Originally held at Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris from July 2017 to January 2018, the exhibition traces the evolution of Christian Dior and the creative directors who have succeeded him, from Yves Saint Laurent to Maria Grazia Chiuri. It reveals 70 years of iconic Haute Couture dresses, archival photography, vintage sketches by Dior himself, along with accessories, original paintings, and much more.

For the virtual experience, the luxury house unveils the making of the exhibition in a documentary on its YouTube channel, which takes viewers on a virtual tour of its many rooms and provides a behind-the-scenes look at curators Florence Müller and Olivier Gabet as they piece together the exhibition, curating pieces from the house’s archive. Müller reveals the many influences of Dior’s successors, from the “spectacular richness” of Yves Saint Laurent to John Galliano’s “treasure trove of technical imagination.” Gabet, on the other hand, explores the relationship between the house of Dior to the world of art. Specific references include ancient Egyptian artifacts from the Louvre that inspired Galliano’s Spring/Summer 2004 collection as well as the modern work of Sterling Ruby that was featured in Raf Simons’ Christian Dior Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2012 collection.

Current creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri is also seen discussing the importance of innovation. “Today, I don’t think it’s possible to speak only about clothes,” she says. “We are speaking about women. My dialogue is part of my time. I think it’s very important to express that we are all different.”
