A mere days before Nike released its Nike Pro Hijab (the first-ever made-for-athletes item of its kind, officially available today) Carine reunited with CR star Halima Aden for a conversation about modest dressing at the Business of Fashion‘s annual Voices conference earlier this week.
Aden, who was born in a Kenyan refugee camp and later naturalized as an American when her family moved to Minnesota at the age of seven, first made headlines as a teen when she became her American town’s first muslim homecoming queen. After competing in the state’s Miss USA pageant in 2016, she caught Carine’s eye, and, a year later—at 19 years of age—she covered CR Fashion Book Issue 10.
Since then, she’s become the first Hijab-wearing model signed by IMG Models, stomped the runway for Yeezy Season 5‘s at New York Fashion Week—her first fashion show—and even starred in Fenty Beauty’s debut campaign earlier this year. “I was intrigued by her beauty,” says Carine, explaining that beyond Aden’s looks, she “was very different from other women.”
