When Rihanna, A$AP Rocky, and Bella Hadid start wearing a brand you haven’t heard much about, it’s usually a good sign to take notice. And in the case of Misbhv, the Polish luxury streetwear label that just launched a shoe collection (and has a top-secret upcoming collaboration with a major sneaker brand next August) the time to get in-the-know is now.
“Growing up and being fascinated with streetwear, with skater boys, with snowboards or basketball, which I was myself, was different,” explains founder and designer Natalia Maczek. “Streetwear is an industry ruled by boys. But what makes us different is the fact that it’s filtered by the girls, or women’s approach to it.”
Authentic is another element that sets Misbhv apart from its contemporaries. There is a prevalence of Eastern European aesthetics in streetwear style which comes naturally to the Polish duo, who have been heavily influenced by the DIY culture of the 1970s and ’80s that has been passed on to their generation.
“There was a big difference between the East and the West in those days. Back then, if you saw an outfit in a movie or perhaps on a record cover, the only way to get it was to make it yourself,” says Maczek’s partner and creative director Thomas Wirski. “It was a lot about working with a tailor, or learning how to sew yourself. Made-to-measure is seen now as the ultimate luxury, but back in the day it was bare necessity.”
Titled Six Years in the Rave, Misbhv’s Fall/Winter 2017 collection draws inspiration from clubs, parties, and music (the duo’s usual point of reference), as well as the photography of American Sean Schermerhorn, who captures Ukraine’s youth culture in his work. The cloths are an interesting mix of rave silhouettes (like oversized pants, short skirts, and puffer jackets) mixed with suiting details. A lot of the fun of the clothes comes from unexpected fabrication choices, like velvet and leather.
But the most noteworthy aspect of its release is the launch of the brand’s debut shoe line. Drawing its silhouette from the ’90s, the range of women’s boots (which are made in Italy) are already a hit, with the calf-high version most notably been seen on Hadid. “I think for every designer it’s a dream to complete the look,” says Wirski. “This is something that we’ve been really interested in for a while.”
While Maczek and Wirski are weary of getting too big too fast, they cannot deny that they’re expanding. Come January, the brand will launch its men’s shoes—a cross between a cowboy boot style with ’60s mod references—and perhaps eventually a runway show.
“That’s the dream for us,” Wirski says. “But I think we need another two, three seasons to get really ready. Obviously, for a young designer, you want to do it right away. We feel like we need to take our time and really prepare, because you can only stage your first show once.”
As streetwear continues to dominate the fashion conversation, Misbhv might very well become become the next Off-White or Gosha Rubchinskiy. But in the meantime, Maczek and Wirski are focused on staying true to themselves, and the kind of fashion the identify with. “We just want to stick to what we do best, just make clothes that we like,” the latter voices. “And hopefully our customer is going to like it.”
