Everyone loves to celebrate their birthday with friends, as Rimowa did with a lavish model-filled party during Paris Fashion Week. But today the iconic aluminum luggage company is going a step further marking its 80th anniversary, with a photo-series of personal luggage from some of its most notable clients—including the suitcase of our own Carine.
“I’m always looking for something new,” she offered. “Travel possesses the same purpose—it takes me to the new.” For those who are curious, Carine’s case (seen above) is on the smaller side of the rollers, and has been personalized with a series of green stickers on the front.
Rimowa first began crafting aluminum luggage in 1937. But the company really made its mark in the 1950s when it introduced the groove-like exterior structure that it still uses today. Though the silver briefcases are mostly commonly associated with spy films (thanks to their durability and combination locks), the luggage is a luxury item for travelers, and the relative simplicity of its design easily leads to customization in the form of stickers and airbrushing.
Other notable names in the project include Karl Lagerfeld (who owns a dark chrome briefcase model), Virgil Abloh (large, all-black with wheels), singer Lykke Li (medium, chrome, and charmingly weathered), and more. Every picture from the series (shot by German photographer Frank Hülsbömer) is available to view now on Rimowa’s social media channels and on its website. Take a peek for yourself, here.
