Up until now, the graffiti-covered Germania Bank building at 190 Bowery has been empty.
Today, the colorful scribbles are still there, but its first and basement levels are filled with high fashion brands such as Calvin Klein, Vetements, Jacquemus, Jil Sander, and Maison Margiela.
Totokaelo’s new outpost is now officially open in New York City, marking the first time the building’s doors have been opened to the public since the early-1960s. The contemporary fashion boutique carries contemporary brands for both men and women and even has a special installation a curated by Acne Studios.
Of course, while inventive retail spaces are always of interest, getting a peek inside the old Germania Bank building itself is worth the trip. Not only is it over 100 years old (it was originally built in 1898), but it has an interesting place in art history. In 1966, the site was purchased by Jay Maisel, who used it as his studio, and even once rented out space to Roy Lichtenstein. The photographer and his family lived in the building as a private residence before selling it in 2015.
Perhaps the best feature of the new store is that Totokaelo has left much of the basement as it was, allow the century-old features of the original bank to shine through.
Totokaelo is now open at 190 Bowery in New York City.
