Paris Fashion Week’s Peep Show

Ooh la la is right. This season the Parisians steamed up the runways with lingerie-baring looks. After all, this a country that takes its lace pretty darn serious so why not show it off?

From Christian Dior’s runway to that of Joseph Altuzarra, who showed his collection in his hometown for the first time, this peek-a-boo effect caught everyone flashing a little skin.

For Spring 2018, New York-based Altuzarra riffed on fishnet stockings—the legwear choice du jour for the racy set—which were transformed into skirts paired with a bold brief. At Saint Laurent, Anthony Vaccarello didn’t even bother to pretend he was covering up the goods, he simply showed a sporty anorak thrown over a model in her knickers.

Maria Grazia Chiuri, the first female designer to lead the house of Christian Dior, continued her feminist statement from fall, this time referencing another female pioneer: artist Niki de Saint Phalle. Grazia Chiuri took a utilitarian approach to undies with a bold red and black stripe that could easily double as swimwear. Sonia Rykiel followed suit with a long, sheer net tank dress that barely concealed a bra and panties-style two-piece. Phoebe Philo also channeled the women’s movement wth her collection for Céline, which featured a print of female mid-century factory workers. Her gals sported burgundy wool-blend lace briefs but they were kept demurely under wraps.

Naughty but nice couturier and ready-to-wear designer Alexis Mabille showed perhaps the most literal interpretation with a navy garter-effect bikini that showed through a completely sheer white net tiered barely-there skirt that looked more like a petticoat. While the label John Galliano (which isnow designed by former design right hand Bill Gaytten) shared the its founder’s cheeky foundations. Gaytten’s ‘50s-style bra and panties under sheer prom dresses were an ode to the John Water’s classic Cry Baby.

Leave it to the French libertines to proclaim a bare all or go home sentiment. Come Spring—as lines between innerwear and outerwear blur—showing your knickers will be en fleek.
