Versace Puts Couture Shows On Pause

In an interview with the New York Times, Versace has confirmed that it’s sitting out Haute Couture Week in Paris for Spring 2017. The Italian house was expected to kick off proceedings in the French capital this coming Sunday, but has opted instead to host a range of client events in key cities around the world, such as New York and Hong Kong.

Versace’s chief executive officer Jonathan Akeroyd cited an already full schedule as the reason behind the decision and was careful to stress that budget cuts were not relevant to the switch up: “At the moment, we do six shows a year, and my feeling is: That’s a lot of shows,” he said to NYT. “Eight, if you count couture, seems excessive. And we all know the model is changing quite a lot, so why not take the opportunity to try something new?” Akeroyd continued, explaining a renewed focus on private clients and red carpet dressing as a secondary reason.

While the news seems somewhat last minute given the close proximity of the show date, it’s not the first time Versace has suspended its couture shows. Donatella put the house’s atelier line on pause in 2004, before electing to return to the Paris show schedule in 2012.
