On June 6, 1933, auto parts salesmen Richard Hollingshead opened the first drive-in theater in Camden, New Jersey, sparking a distinctive piece of American history. Hollingshead charged people around 25 cents per person to see the British comedy Wives Beware from the comfort of their own cars. The idea actually first began with Hollingshead’s mother, who apparently, was too portly to fit in a movie theater seat. Hollingshead sought out to solve a problem, “So he stuck her in a car and put a 1928 projector on the hood of the car, and tied two sheets to trees in his yard” said Jim Knopp of the United Drive-in Theatre Owners Association. On the 86th anniversary of America’s first drive-in theater, CR takes a trip back, popcorn not included.
