When the show The Hills premiered on MTV on May 31, 2006, the world had seen nothing like it. While its predecessor—the wildly successful Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County—gave us a glimpse into the teenaged lifestyles of the rich and famous, its six-season sister series packaged the excitement and celebrity of young Hollywood into smooth helicopter shots and paparazzi-style documentation. It was a reality show about a reality we craved grounded by nuances we all shared: a first date. A job interview. A break up. As we entered into the next stages of our lives, so too did LC, Lo, Audrina, Whitney, and–in a far away universe across town—Heidi. Thirteen years after the series premiere, and ahead of its reboot, The Hills: New Beginnings, later this month, CR looks at the elements that made it legendary in pop culture.
