Agnès Varda’s Most Remarkable Films

START

Belgian-born photographer-turned-filmmaker Agnès Varda was what many consider to be the matriarch of French film. Varda was a feminist director, who is credited for leading the experimental French New Wave film movement, arguably one of the most impactful moments in the history of cinema. She invented the term cinécriture (cinema-writing), meaning every aspect in her movies is included with meaning or message, something commonly used today in film. “I wanted to invent cinema, and be happy to be a woman. I wanted to be a radical,” she once said.

Varda’s production company, Cinè-Tamaris confirmed the director’s death today at her home in Paris. As the first female director to be awarded an honorary Oscar in 2017, CR remembers the legend’s most iconic works that shaped the future of film, paving the way for women to follow.
