Ads of a bygone era inspired intrigue and fantasy, making space for designers to share what makes them tick, eschewing even product for purpose. So in that spirit, we enlisted a creative class of eight inimitable emerging designers to create a portfolio of their fantasy displays, ads that reflect their own singular and rather fabulous perspectives.

AHLUWALIA

After winning last year’s H&M design award, Ahluwalia’s presence continues to spread like wildfire throughout the industry. London based designer and founder of Ahluwalia, Priya Ahluwalia intertwines her Indian-Nigerian heritage by creating menswear pieces made from up-cycled materials and fairly paid workers. Inspired by her grandfather’s tailored silhouettes and a color scheme reminiscent of the ’90s era, Ahluwalia effortlessly combines old with new.

CHOPOVA LOWENA

Designing with intention, Chopova Lowena are dedicated to celebrating heritage and sustainability. By combining an American, Bulgarian, and traditional English aesthetic to their clothes, Chopova Lowena successfully pay homage to their roots while still helping patrons find their identity. Recognizable pleated patchwork, embroidered jeans and an 80’s rock essence has catapulted Chopova Lowena to cult status.

KENNETH IZE

Upon being awarded Designer of the year at Africa’s fashion festival ‘Arise’, Kenneth Ize shows no signs of slowing down. Ize seamlessly combines Nigerian tradition with a new aged perspective that produces reimagined sophistication in the form of structured silhouettes and daring hues. Ize works directly with weavers and designers based in Nigeria which only reaffirms his ethos of community and intimacy.

ALLED-MARTINEZ

2018 LVMH Graduate prize winner, Archie M. Alled-Martinez has altered knit wear as we know it. Combining his technical prowess and eye for simplistic cuts, Barcelona designer, Alled-Martinez delivers an array of minimal yet romantically, tailored pieces.

THEBE MAGUGU

Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, Thebe Magugu won the coveted 2019 LMVH award, which helped catapult his namesake luxury label a mere two years within being in the fashion workforce. Inspired by his native land, Magugu’s latest line celebrates and references revolutionary symbols through incorporating beret’s, harnesses and slogans reminiscent of a darker time in South Africa. Complex silhouettes that are wearable yet reimagined are aplenty in Magugu’s arsenal.

BARRAGÁN

Proud of his roots, Mexican designer Victor Barragán continues to defy boundaries while singlehandedly putting Mexico at the forefront of fashion and culture. Famed for his sultry silhouettes, Barragán draws inspiration from a plethora of sources.

COLLINA STRADA

Since 2009, Hillary Taymour has placed Youthfulness, vibrancy and expression at the forefront of the Collina Strada aesthetic. Adamant on transparency and sustainability, founder and New York based designer, Hilary Taymour is uncompromising in her journey of design and activism.

OTTOLINGER

Famed for their raw aesthetics and deconstructed pieces, Berlin based design duo, Christa Bösch and Cosima Gadient have captured the hearts of many with their mesh pieces and see through flares. A leap of faith resulted in both Bösch and Gadient deciding to pivot away from their studies of law and graphic design which resulted in the birth of Ottolinger. As seen on the likes of SZA, Kim Kardashian, Dua Lipa, and Acra, this spontaneous duo is only getting warmed up.
