Even though the Coronavirus pandemic has temporarily stalled the Public Theater’s in-person productions, an upcoming virtual event will bring some of Broadway’s best talent into the homes of any theater enthusiast. On Monday, June 1, the New York City’s Public Theater will put on We Are One Public, a one night-only virtual event featuring some of the industry’s top talent, including appearances by Anne Hathaway, Antonio Banderas, Danielle Brooks, Glenn Close, Sandra Oh, Philippa Soo, Sting, Oscar Isaac, and more.

The show will be hosted by Jesse Tyler Ferguson and directed by Kenny Leon, a Tony-winning theater director known for his work on 2014’s A Raisin in the Sun. While anyone is welcome to watch from home for free, the program’s webpage encourages donations to the Public and invites to a pre-show cocktail party will be extended based on amounts donated. Fittingly, the evening’s dress code will be “virtually stunning.” Following the event, there will be a post-performance dance party.

The Public, a New York institution and theater “of, by, and for all people,” is the non-profit behind the beloved Shakespeare in the Park shows that take place in Central Park each year, and operates a mobile unit that tours throughout New York’s five boroughs. While its summer programming is on hold amidst the coronavirus, the We Are One Public show continues the Public’s commitment to showing accessible theater.

Along with the virtual event, the Public’s annual fundraiser will be replaced by an online auction that will launch the week before the performance. Past Public auctions have included fun memorabilia, meet-and-greets, and even a personalized outgoing voicemail message recorded by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

We Are One Public will stream on the Public’s website, Facebook, and Youtube from 8 p.m. EST on June 1, 2020.
