Right off his successful run with the smash-hit The Politician, Ryan Murphy is back and bigger than ever with Hollywood, a Golden Age-inspired drama that turns history on its head. Following a series of teaser photos dropped earlier this month, Netflix has now unveiled the trailer for the the glitzy world of the sure-to-be-hit show premiering on the streaming service May 1.

Co-created by Ian Brennan and with Janet Mock on board as a producer, the limited series follows a group of actors and filmmakers in a post-World War II Tinseltown as they spark their up-and-coming careers in the titular city, no matter the cost. It may sound like a familiar narrative, but the show presents an alternate view of the entertainment capital where actors and writers who categorically face bias in the industry for their race, sexual orientation, gender, or age are more openly part of the Hollywood studio system.

Mock, who is a frequent Murphy collaborator, stated: “With the present so fraught and the future uncertain, we turned to the past for direction, uncovering buried history to spin an aspirational tale of what ifs: what if a band of outsiders were given a chance to tell their own story? What if the person with greenlight power was a woman? The screenwriter a black man? What if the heroine was a woman of color? The matinee idol openly gay? And what if they were all invited into the room where the decisions are made, entering fully and unapologetically themselves to leave victorious and vaunted, their place in history cemented.”

Hollywood is chock full of Murphy favorites, including Darren Criss, Jeremy Pope, David Corenswet, Laura Harrier, Samara Weaving, Jim Parsons, Dylan McDermot, Holland Taylor, Patti LuPone, Joe Mantello, and Jake Picking, playing new and historical characters.
