Louis Vuitton is stepping up to produce non-surgical face masks, answering the French government’s request for more of the protective gear to be made available amidst the coronavirus. The luxury label has reopened 12 of its 16 leather goods factories, where three hundred workers are set to make hundreds of thousands of masks.

While technically non-medical, the masks have been approved by the governing bodies and are being made in collaboration with Mode Grand Ouest, a regional textile supplier that is providing one of the main materials for the masks. The brand’s priority is to make protective masks for the frontline healthcare workers, but it will also be distributing a sum to nearby retirement communities.

LVMH, Louis Vuitton’s parent company, has also mobilized by ordering 40 million masks from China on behalf of France’s hospital workers. It has also reopened several fragrance factories to produce hand sanitizer.
