Fondazione Prada is diving into cinema archives and inviting viewers at home to join, providing an alternative to self-quarantined Netflix marathons. Teaming up with subscription-based streaming service Mubi, the Milan-based arts center will present Perfect Failures, a curatorial collaboration that features an abundance of carefully chosen films that were said to be widely misunderstood upon their original release. The selection of films will be available beginning April 5 on Mubi’s website, accompanied by a dedicated section on Fondazione Prada’s website where information on the movies and directors will be included.

Through the inclusion of box office flops, critical disappointments, and other controversial film choices, Perfect Failures aims to promote “that a movie’s original reception is not the final word on its true value,” according to Fondazione Prada. The series will kick off with the film Southland Tales by Richard Kelly and will continue with a line-up dedicated to each country the project will be streaming in. Other titles include: 1967 by Charlie Chaplin, Fedora by Billy Wilder, Night Moves by Kelly Reichardt, Un Divan à New York (A Couch in New York) by Chantal Akerman, and Showgirls by Paul Verhoeven.

The arts center hopes to engage the public during this current health crisis and create new perceptions of these films in light of an overall changed cultural context, new methods of interpretation, and a diverse audience, as spectators will be viewing the films remotely.

With the aim of strengthening the international dimension of Fondazione Prada’s film program during the pandemic, it will continue its research on new ways of viewing and sharing with public, pushing past the enjoyment of projecting films on a cinema screen.
