In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, some of fashion’s biggest names are playing a role in tackling medical supply shortages and donating funds needed to combat the virus and protect health workers. Amongst these, French luxury group Kering has bought three million surgical masks from China to provide to the French health service, and has plans to produce more within its brands’ factories.

Due to global concern surrounding the virus, surgical masks and disposable gloves have quickly sold out, leaving hospital workers vulnerable. Following approval from medical authorities, Kering-owned luxury labels Gucci, Balenciaga, and Saint Laurent are set to alter the use of their factories and create millions of surgical masks and other essential supplies for healthcare workers. Kering has also made donations to hospitals across Italy, the China’s Hubei Red Cross Foundation, and the France’s Pasteur Institute to assist in research efforts for COVID-19.

Other European conglomerates have done their part, with LVMH providing 40 million surgical masks to France as well as producing hand sanitizer for hospital and medical professionals. L’Oréal and Coty have also begun adapting their fragrance factories to to make hand sanitizer. Meanwhile, brands such as Paris-based Coperni are encouraging those at home to create their own masks so surgical-grade ones can be saved for those in the medical field.
