The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has announced that Nina Simone and Sister Rosetta Tharpe will be inducted into the Hall of Fame in April 2018. Simone, who won in the “Performer” category and Tharpe, who is being honored for “Early Influence,” were among 19 total acts who were nominated for the very first time. Although singer Kate Bush, who was also nominated, didn’t make the induction list, it’s particularly exciting to see female artists recognized for their significant impact on modern music.

Tharpe—a gospel singer who played the electric guitar, sold out arenas in the 1950s, and paved the way for Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash—was the first person to put Little Richard on stage.

As for Simone, she has one of the most powerful voices of all time—both as a singer and as an activist—empowering countless artists. She proved that music could mean something, and her work continues to be sampled today. It is bittersweet that both Tharpe and Simone have passed away (in 1973 and 2003, respectively), and will not live to see their recognition.

Bush, meanwhile, was among the first women to include visuals like dance and art among her performances. This, in addition to the headset microphone which was created for her tour in 1979, are now must-haves for pop stars from Lady Gaga to Bjork.

The other winners include Bon Jovi, The Cars, Dire Straits, and The Moody Blues— all of whom have been on shortlists before, but have yet to receive entry.

The induction ceremony (featuring live performances) will be broadcast on HBO April 14, 2018.
