Joan Didion, the legendary novelist, essayist, and screenwriter behind titles such as Slouching Towards Bethlehem, Play It As It Lays, South and West: From a Notebook, and countless more, is finally getting the documentary treatment, thanks to Netflix and her filmmaker nephew Griffin Dunne. Despite the fact that much of her work is reflective of her real life, there is still something quite mysterious about the author. And considering her legacy—she is widely considered to be the voice of a generation for her writing in the 1960s and ’70s—this exploration is long overdue.
“We’re making it because no one else, incredibly, has made a documentary about Joan Didion,” he says in a crowd funding video supporting the film. Titled Joan Didion: The Center Will Not Hold (formerly known as We Tell Ourselves Stories In Order to Live, based on another one of her tomes), the movie chronicles the author’s life and career, from her early days as a Vogue writer, to writing one of her most acclaimed books (The Year of Magical Thinking) in the wake of personal tragedy.
In the past few years the fashion world has found a renewed interest in the writer, first when she was tapped by Celine to front a campaign in 2015, and then again when she was among those featured in the book Legendary Authors and the Clothes They Wore (in which she also appears on the cover).
It is a testament to her personal style of writing and unique perspective on life that Didion, who is in her 80s, continues to be such a force of cultural impact. Then again, as Dunne points out in the trailer, she is compelled to write. It helps that she, like all humans, is unable to escape the human experience, and that she has a knack for putting unidentifiable feelings into words.
Joan Didion: The Center Will Not Hold will premiere at the New York Film Festival on October 11, and will be available on Netflix October 27.
