Amelia Earhart’s Most Groundbreaking Flights in Photos

Amelia Earhart became passionate about flying at a young age. When she was 23 years old, she visited an airfield with her father, and air racer Frank Hawks gave them a ride. After that flight, she knew she was destined to be a pilot. At 30 years old, she became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean and four years later, in 1932, she became the first woman to complete the journey solo. Along with being a pilot, she was an author who wrote best-selling books about her flights and advocated for women in aviation, forming the organization The Ninety-Nines. She served as inspiration to women across the country, earning celebrity status after receiving the United States Distinguished Flying Cross for her solo flight across the Atlantic and becoming a visiting faculty member at Purdue University as an advisor to aeronautical engineering and a career counselor to women. Although Earhart tragically disappeared in 1937 while attempting a circumnavigational flight, she will always be remembered as a talented pilot and pioneer in aviation for women.
