Octavia E. Butler, the late African-American science fiction author, was of the most influential writers of her time. In a genre ruled by white men, Butler twice earned both the Hugo Award and Nebula Prize for titles including her novella Bloodchild,”her short story “Speech Sounds,” and her novel Parable of the Talents. Beyond the awards, she became the first science fiction writer to receive the MacArthur Fellowship in 1955. Butler also helped define Afrofuturism, a movement drawing from science fiction, fantasy, and Black history with a socially conscious bend.
