A$AP Rocky Releases Song Dedicated to Raf Simons

The argument can be made that A$AP Rocky is the only rapper more tied to the fashion world than Kanye West. Pretty Flacko has been tapped as the face of Dior Homme twice, designed a menswear collaboration with J.W. Anderson, and a couple of months ago, he released a unisex Guess capsule collection. To further profess his love for the fashion world, today, he’s released a song in tribute to Raf Simons. Simply entitled “Raf,” the track also features rapper-come-style-mavens Lil Uzi Vert, Quavo, and Frank Ocean.

A$AP sung Raf’s praises in Time last month: “I feel like Raf Simons is important for the culture based on the fact that he built a whole new religion around fashion.” Ocean has also done his part promoting fashion via his music, releasing a song called “Chanel.” Lil Uzi Vert and Quavo are also part of the new post-verbal, fashion-aware generation of hip hop artists redefining masculinity in the genre. Both are seen frequently wearing flamboyant outfits and sometimes women’s wear.

What are some the most fire lines in the new song? A$AP raps: “It’s rare Raf when I wear Raf. Bare Raf when I wear Raf. Might invest into some Raf Shares. Lil n***as still share Raf.” He then goes on to shout out designers like Rick Owens, Kris Van Assche, and Jonathan Anderson. Name-dropping big name fashion houses is no new thing in hip-hop, but the entrance of these gender-bending designers into the lexicon is indicative of a more accepting, and less hyper-masculine, era in the rap community.
