A New Documentary Offers Rare Insight Into the Life of Heath Ledger

The first trailer for an upcoming documentary on Heath Ledger has been released. Premiered by Spike TV, I Am Heath Ledger will debut at the Tribeca Film Festival later this month, offering a rare glimpse into the late actor’s life. In it, friends, colleagues, co-stars, and family members share their memories of the star, including Heath’s sister, Kate Ledger. Also included is footage from the actor’s many personal video cameras, which model Christina Cauchi remembers as never being far from his hand.

In the clip above, actor Ben Mendelsohn reflects on the artistic courage of the actor, who went from playing the love interest in teen rom-coms like 10 Things I Hate About You to tackling more serious roles in Brokeback Mountain and The Dark Knight, which went on to earn him his first and only Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. “Before Brokeback Mountain came out, it would have been unthinkable to have a romantic tragedy involving two gay cowboys,” says Mendelsohn. “This is one of the biggest heartthrobs on earth taking on that character—that’s an artist.”
