Olivia Rodrigo is the musical artist on everyone’s minds and lips these days. After “Drivers License” and “Deja Vu”, the California native is practically taking over the charts as the latest fixation in today’s music scene. Ahead of her forthcoming album Sour which is set to release on May 21, Rodrigo is tapping into the punk-pop and grunge-inspired ballads that are said to be included on the album with the singer’s latest viral release “Good 4 U”.

Today, the new song “Good 4 U” music video directed by Petra Collins is released where Rodrigo stars as a high school cheerleader who’s out for revenge. The fierce and sarcastic lyrics of the ballistic and fun chorus, “Well, good for you/You look happy and healthy, not me/If you ever cared to ask/Good for you/You’re doin’ great out there without me, baby/God, I wish that I could do that/I’ve lost my mind, I’ve spent the night/Cryin’ on the floor of my bathroom/But you’re so unaffected, I really don’t get it/But I guess good for you.” The music video corresponds to her brutally honest, authenticity where we unexpectedly see an innocent fresh-faced cheerleader purchase gasoline in an empty convenience store and dance with burning windows and flooded flooring in her bedroom. Scenes from the music video bear similarities to the 2009 horror film Jennifer’s Body starring Amanda Seyfried and Megan Fox. In a series of throwback looks from latex gloves and corsets to baby blue cheerleader outfits, the music video was It-girl Devon Lee Carlson’s styling debut.

Rodrigo got her foot in the music scene when her single “Drivers License” went viral on TikTok. At the end of the first weekend of its release it was the biggest hit of 2021 where the song spent 8 weeks on Billboard Hot 100 and it broke Spotify’s record for most Spotify streams in a single day for a non-holiday song with over 15 million streams. The song is about dismantling established gender norms in pop music where emotional vulnerability puts the woman at the driver’s seat.

The singer is having a full-blown busy career when her series on Disney+, High School Musical: The Musical: The Series launched where she stars as an insecure theater kid Nini Salazar-Roberts. It’s hard to believe that the talented Rodrigo is graduating from high school this year.

The success of the singer’s release of her singles heightens the anticipation of her fanbase who loves girl power that makes messiness look glorious. She’s the new addition to the other young, pop stars with a taste of rebellion like Lorde, Taylor Swift, and Avril Lavigne.

Fashion goes hand in hand with Rodrigo’s musical influences as she has been tapping onto ‘90s fashion trends in all of her looks from the butterfly claw clips, pleated plaid mini skirt, oversized band tees and tinted glasses. Making her CR’s latest It-girl.

Rodrigo’s debut album Sour is set to release on Friday, May 21, 2021.
