On this day 13 years ago, Twitter was launched to the American public. It was created by San Francisco based coder Jack Dorsey, who sought a faster, far-reaching alternative to texting his friends. Intended to reflect the length of a standard SMS message, 140 character blurbs, also known as tweets, were sent at the rate of less than 5,000 a day in 2007.
Today, over 500 million tweets are posted on a daily basis by nearly 300 million unique active monthly users, amongst them some of the worlds most prominent entertainers, athletes, and intellectuals. On top of generating real-time news and information, Twitter also serves as a forum for some of the world’s most creative clickbait, granting direct access into the minds of the most elusive (and hilarious) celebrities.
In honor of the platform’s anniversary, CR dives into the archives of the Twittsphere.
