Julia Restoin Roitfeld is known for her impeccable style (and an Instagram feed demonstrating her devotion to cheetah print and all-black looks) just as much as the multiple projects she has under her belt. The Parsons School of Design grad is often jetting off to attend shows and the latest events. To mark the end of a momentous London Fashion Week (in which she documented Christopher Bailey’s last Burberry show and JW Anderson’s co-ed show), Restoin Roitfeld also hosted an intimate cocktail to celebrate CR Girls 2018 and the upcoming issue of CR Fashion Book Issue 12. Here, she takes us through her whirlwind LFW.
FRIDAY, DAY ONE
London Fashion Week is always my favorite. First of all, I have a deep love for London, I love the energy, and the contrast between a deep sense of heritage and innovation. As I don’t have shows until later this afternoon, I decided to take a bit of time off to beat the jet lag and go for a run through Hyde Park, followed by a cryotherapy at 111 Cryo in Harvey Nicks.
I rush back to the hotel to get ready and off to my first show, Marta Jakubowski, at the BFC space. The show kicks off with “I Am Every Woman” as the soundtrack and models in sexy, feminine power suits. Then, I rush to Mulberry, which always has a lovely scene. Welcomed by a wall adorned by beautiful flower bouquets (the Brits are always great at details), I’m greeted by a surprise performance from Goldfrapp mid-show. This is London!
I then rush to my friend Skiim’s presentation at the Assouline Gallery on Piccadilly. A quick visit turned out into a playing dress up session! I end the day with dinner with friends at Isabel and then I’m off to bed early as I have a busy day the next morning covering almost every show for CR‘s Instagram Stories.
SATURDAY, DAY TWO
I have a long day ahead with seven shows to attend, back-to-back. I’m not sure I’ll be able to return to the hotel and change for the evening so I pack a few extra pieces just in case I’ll have to change. It’s times like these when the car becomes my house!
We start early with JW Anderson which is always one of the most anticipated shows of LFW. After that, it’s non-stop rushing against the clock followed by Simone Rocha, whose collection this season is full of beautiful dresses that remind me of a modern Princess Sissi. Then it’s off to Ports, which is located all the way across town at the Tate Modern Museum, which I love.
I go back to central London for Molly Goddard, where the girls are always playful and the clothes are always in party-mode.
After the show, I finally have about 30 minutes, which gives me just enough time to grab a coffee and change in a Starbucks before the long-awaited Burberry show, which is Christopher Bailey’s last collection for the house. Christopher took the opportunity to celebrate the LGBTQ community, incorporating rainbow flags with some of his classic Burberry pieces. With Cara Delevingne’s gorgeous faux fur rainbow cape, it was a bittersweet event, ending with always the best soundtrack (especially the remix of “Smalltown Boy” by Bronski Beat). When it comes to music, you can’t beat the Brits.
I have a bit more time than I thought and I rush back to the hotel to refresh quickly before the Chalayan show. I end my day stopping by the Halpern and Browns London party at Five Guys Burger. It’s the perfect way to end a day…burgers, fries, and a frozen margarita.
SUNDAY, DAY THREE
Sunday has a bit of a slower start, with a Burberry re-see at their showroom followed by a visit of their main store on Regent Street with a nice coffee break at their in-store cafe Thomas.
I don’t have anything until my next show this evening, Peter Pilotto, so I decide to enjoy London and go for a long run around Primrose Hill and Regents Park followed by a small walk on Primrose Hill High Street, where I bought a candle and green juice at the Cowshed Spa and Cafe. That’s what I love the most about London. It’s a huge buzzing city where every neighborhood is its own village.
Back at the hotel, I finally got a chance to try that famous vegan cauliflower pizza that everyone raves about. I am staying at the Blakes Hotel by the way, which totally feels like a home away from home. Small, private, cozy, and intimate with the nicest staff.
It’s off to hair and makeup and after Peter Pilotto, I will head out straight to the Universal BAFTA after-party at Chiltern Firehouse. The show is held at Tramp, which used to be the biggest club in London during the ’80s. The show is held during a dinner, in which the girls walk through the restaurant while we are enjoying dinner and champagne.
Then, I’m off to a quick dinner with friends (and a quick outfit change in the bathroom, of course) at Fischer on Marylebone High Street, before heading to Chiltern for the BAFTAS, which is of course a great place to end the evening.
MONDAY, DAY FOUR
It’s the last day for me at LFW and I will be hosting the very first CR event in London at the Blakes Hotel.
Again, I have shows back-to-back, starting with a presentation at Pringle of Scotland followed by Erdem at the National Portrait Gallery (one of my favorite London museums), and then Marques Almeida in some sort of underground passage under the Waterloo Train Station. It was quite a contrast with the National Portrait Gallery and that’s why I love London.
I’m off to David Koma and finally, it’s time for a coffee break before heading to the show of one of my all-time favorite London designers, Christopher Kane. The theme of the show is “More Joy” which I totally agree with. Every look is more beautiful than the one before, particularly one of the red lace dresses! It’s a great way to end the shows in London.
I’m again in a rush, but it’s exciting because I’m getting ready to host our event. It turned out to be the perfect, intimate friends-and-family style cocktail at the Blakes. It’s the perfect way to celebrate the end of LFW with all of the people that I love in this fabulous city.
