From the beginning of the millennium to the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards happening Sunday, the term “the dress” in all its vagueness, quickly calls to mind the Versace dress Jennifer Lopez wore to the 2000 ceremony. Slit up-to-there and open down to below her navel, J.Lo’s tropical-print chiffon number was secured, just barely, by a citrine-studded brooch. That dress made waves.

It turned out to be an early piece in a long love affair between Lopez and various iterations of naked dresses and one of the first prominent naked dresses to walk a red carpet before pop culture’s eyes got used to so much skin. J.Lo’s dress however stands out in history. Beyond its own Wikipedia page, that dress is responsible for Google Image Search. Until that moment, the search onion provided results in text exclusively.

Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt put it this way: “At the time, it was the most popular search query we had ever seen. But we had no surefire way of getting users exactly what they wanted: J.Lo wearing that dress.”

As Emily Dickinson put it, the heart wants what the heart wants. And modernly, the market is sure to follow.

Two years ago, Lopez recalled an awareness of the dress’s impact as she walked the red carpet, hand-in-hand with then-boyfriend Sean Combs, then known as Puff Daddy.

“I felt like, an energy. Like everything started stirring,” J.Lo recounted for Entertainment Tonight. “I was like, ‘What’s happening?’ And my dress was happening and I didn’t know it.”

Then, of course, in September 2019, Lopez made a surprise appearance wearing an updated version of the dress down the Versace Spring/Summer 2020 show, which was centered around its tropical print.
