Shoes. Shopping. Sarah Jessica Parker. Need we say more? It takes a legend to cause a fashionable stir on one of the biggest shopping days of the year, and SJP has done just that. The CR-favorite opens a New York City pop-up shop today, smack dab in the heart of midtown at Fifth Avenue and 52nd Street. On offer will be bestselling shoe styles that have become a signature of the eponymous brand since its inception four years ago, as well as new and exclusive styles. Parker also knows a girl needs more than just chic footwear, and the pop-up will have her line’s handbags and iconic little black dress. The interior will feature custom wallpaper inspired by her showroom’s staggering Lucite shoe walls, and furnishings plucked from vintage shops and Etsy. The space is only open through December 3, 2017 and SJP herself will be popping in throughout the week. To celebrate the opening, CR caught up with the actress to chat on all things holiday and holiday shopping.
What were some of your favorite childhood holiday traditions?
We always had stockings with an orange, walnuts, a candy cane, and a wee stocking gift. Paperless tubes for wrapping paper were left as evidence that “Santa” had been there. The tree was naked on Christmas when the “babies” went to bed, and the tale was that Santa decorated and wrapped the presents.
Are there any new holiday traditions that you have started with your family?
I buy an ornament for my children, wherever and whenever I travel. Every year. They will have wonderful, sentimental, meaningful ornaments for their first tree when they leave home.
What are some of your earliest memories of New York City during the holidays?
Waiting for my crosstown bus and peering into stores. Stores that were way out of my league, but the memories are vivid. In the late ’70s, the windows at [Henri] Bendel’s and Bonwit’s were perfect for a dreamer. I didn’t shop a lot as a young girl, I really didn’t have the means. But, I was a very satisfied window shopper.
Now you have your very own storefront on Fifth Avenue. How did you choose the location?
It found us. Sort of. We had been having conversations for a while about opening a New York City store. We saw it and felt it was a super spot in the heart of midtown.
What can we expect inside the store (besides shoes, of course)?
A custom wallpaper made for us by Wallshoppe, which we are terrifically excited about. As well as our signature color, which is a blush-tone pink. We hope we offer a party for the foot.
Will we find you at the store during its limited run?
Oh yes, I’ll be stocking the store in the days prior to the opening. And, of course, I will be there in any and all opportunities I have!
SJP by Sarah Jessica Parker is open at 640 Fifth Avenue from Friday, November 24, until Sunday, December 3, 2017.
