In high fashion, there’s almost no such thing as effortless beauty. From facial treatments that leave your complexion dewy and luminous to the perfect winged eyeliner, experts reveal their most-trusted, insider hacks for CR‘s series, Beauty Secrets.

From a young age, Lan Belinky knew she would go into the family business developed by her father. Growing up in Japan, Belinky watched her grandmother and aunt care for their skin, and her passion grew from there. “They had simple rituals that were treasured and special,” Belinky tells CR. “From an early age, I became so fascinated by beauty, and specifically skincare.” By the time she graduated college, it was a natural step for her to join her father Gen Inomata, the founder of botanical-based clean beauty brand Boscia, at the skincare company. As the co-creator and general manager of Boscia, Belinky seeks to pay tribute to her bicultural heritage (her family moved to the U.S. in 1996) through educating consumers about traditional Japanese ingredients and thoughtful skincare. Here, CR speaks to the industry-insider about J-beauty, skincare myths, and double cleansing.

What has it been like being part of a family business in skincare?
“My father’s side of the family is Japanese, and he had the opportunity to work with Fancl, a skincare company based in Japan and [Boscia’s] parent company. He had decided to launch that here in the U.S. about 15 to 20 years ago, but after research, we realized that wouldn’t work. The components were too small, and I think J-beauty was not even around, so it was a very difficult concept. That is when Boscia, which stands for botanical science, was born. From the beginning stages, I would watch my father develop the brand. I even played a role in high school by handing out samples and going to festivals; I knew this was something I wanted to be a part of. I officially joined the team in 2008 and worked my way up. It was definitely something that started as a passion, just loving skincare, and I was so fortunate that my dad founded this.”

You mentioned at the beginning of the story how there wasn’t really acceptance towards J-beauty and Asian beauty in general when you started, but how do you think that fits into skincare landscape now? And also how does that fit with clean beauty, too?
“Definitely back [when Boscia was founded], it wasn’t a good thing to be a brand from Japan. That began to change when we started to see a lot of influences come out of Asia, like K-beauty, and it was so cool and innovative. Also, the launch of the BB cream and glass skin. Now we are at a way different place in terms of beauty that comes from Asia. Same with clean beauty. I think what lead the clean beauty movement is that people became so conscious of what they were eating from a dietary standpoint, and I think that rippled into beauty. One of the trendiest words for us at the beginning of this clean beauty movement was, ‘are you vegan? are you gluten-free? what other bad ingredients are in there?’ That has been really interesting.”

Can you walk me through your skincare routine?
“Before I go into the details, I just want to give you some insight. I have three small children. My oldest daughter is three and I have two twin boys that are two. My skincare ritual time is the only time I have for myself. I currently use all Boscia products. In the morning, I start off by washing my face. I use the Purifying Cleansing Gel–an everyday gel cleanser which is amazing. I follow up with the [Resurfacing Treatment Toner With Apple Cider Vinegar]–it has a 20 percent acid complex that helps chemically exfoliate your skin, which is great for the morning. I then use our Rosewater Mist with witch hazel. This is a great mist that I also use throughout the day for sporadic hydration. I then follow up with our Indigo Eye Cream. This is a great daytime product that has a purple hue that is great for color correcting and helps with dark circles. I then use our [Sake] Treatment Water. It’s an underrated product that is best to use before you apply any skincare creams or serums because it helps the products absorb into your skin much more efficiently. I then top it off with the Cactus Water Moisturizer and our BB cream. That’s my morning routine, I do switch it up but that is currently what I am using. In all honesty, I am religious about having 30 minutes every morning to do my skincare routine.

What is you daily makeup look?
“For my daily look, I love the Anastasia brow pencil that I have been using recently. Two items that I cannot live without are the Fenty lipgloss in the Fu$$y shade. I am not someone that wears a lot of makeup, but this is probably my third bottle. It goes with everything and is such a fantastic shade, I love it. And then the Lancôme Grandiôse mascara would be my go-to. It took me a little while to find it, but it’s been several years that I have repeat purchased. For my eyelashes, it gives me the volume and length that I desire, so I love this mascara. Also, I love the IGK Mistress Hydrating Hair Balm. I have long, fine hair and it keeps my little whispies away and keeps my fuzzies at bay.”

Are there any beauty or skincare myths you’ve discovered in your career?
“Absolutely. The most common myth is that oily skinned individuals don’t need oils. Going back to years ago, Boscia was one of the first brands to launch a cleansing oil in prestige skincare from Sephora. The overwhelming feedback we got was that, ‘I would never use an oil cleanser on my skin, I am so oily skinned.’ After years of training and education, that notion has really turned around. Sometimes you have oily skin because you strip away all the good oils on your face by using harsh cleansers, and your skin tries to overcompensate that by producing excess oils. Just like diamonds cut diamonds, oil really does cut oil. You do need a little of that good oil, so your skin doesn’t get oily.”

What are your top skincare tips?
“My number one advice is to double cleanse. You really need to use the oil to remove everything that is on your face and then follow up with that water based cleanser. That is truly the first time that your face is being cleansed. All of the amazing ingredients in that cleanser will be touching your skin, not the makeup that is sitting on your face. Number two is to multi-mask. That has been such a fun experience for everyone. Does everyone necessarily need a specific mask all over their face? Maybe not. If you are fortunate enough to have multiple masks, you can really customize and target your masking rituals by multi-masking. Lastly, this might actually be the number one advice, but in skincare you just have to be consistent. Even if you are spending a lot of money on expensive creams and serums, we all know you can’t just use it for one day, and same goes for if you stop using it–you will not see the results. Just be consistent, be patient, and listen to your skin. Make sure you have a fun routine so you can follow it continuously.”
