In high fashion, there’s almost no such thing as effortless beauty. From facial treatments that leave your complexion dewy and luminous to the perfect winged eyeliner, experts reveal their most-trusted, insider hacks for CR‘s series, Beauty Secrets.

Gucci Westman’s relationship with makeup began when her mother told her she couldn’t wear it when she was younger. “Of course, I rebelled and really played with it all,” she tells CR. “It was love at first sight.” Westman started looking at a few different makeup schools (Westman was once an au pair for fashion journalist Anouk Ortlieb, who introduced her to the world of beauty and gifted Westman the makeup she didn’t want). She eventually landed at Paris’ Neo Christian Chauveau, where she learned how to apply makeup using stick formulations and that’s what she’s been using ever since.

Amassing impressive A-list clientele including Jennifer Aniston, Anne Hathaway, and Julianne Moore, Westman decided to launch her own clean beauty line, Westman Atelier, this past fall and stuck with what she knew best: stick makeup products. Here, she shares her skincare savers, her favorite makeup look, and her take on the rise of plastic surgery and body modifications in the beauty industry.

Walk me through your skincare routine.
“Skin is at the beginning and end of everything I do as a makeup artist, so I believe in really spending time on a routine. Before I do anything in the morning, I start by meditating and use Sarah Chapman Skinesis Ultimate Cleanse. It leaves my skin clean and fresh. Before I leave the house, I will always cover my face in SPF. As for the evening, my go-to products are Georgia Louise Honey Sheet Masks with her Pulse + GLO device, which uses galvantoc currents to boost circulation and refine pores. I will also use Dr. Devgan Platinum Hyaluronic Serum to face and neck and then dab on SK-II Facial Treatment Essence.”

Makeup products you’re loving right now?
“My Westman Atelier line: I love applying Lit Up Highlighter under the Vital Skin Foundation for extra added glow and dewiness. I am also really into Wellco Deep Peruvian Chocolate Shake and Libido Supplement. Actually, my favorite product right now that I have been testing out for so long is my new mascara, Eye Love You. It is launching super soon and is super safe for eyes but still delivers with the ultimate performance.”

What’s a favorite recent look you’ve done?
“I love the look we created for Gwyneth Paltrow’s wedding. She wanted to look like herself, but a bit enhanced, [which is] exactly my cup of tea.”

How would you like to see the beauty industry change?
“I think we have got to a point in beauty where we are always trying to change what we look like or who we are and are constantly on the search for perfection. It saddens me that this is such a trend at the moment and makes me question how women view themselves today. Why can’t we feel more confident with just a little boost as opposed to such a huge transformation, such as surgical enhancements? Nothing is wrong with a complete change in a makeup look or surgical procedures to make you feel confident, but I feel so many women and men are doing it. I look forward to the pendulum hopefully swinging back to empowering women and speaking about aspiration as opposed to what we are currently experiencing.”

Is there a makeup trend you’re loving right now?
Transparency and accountability. We hold this responsibility, not only in the beauty industry, but in all industries. You also can’t go wrong with a bright fuchsia cheek color on lips and cheeks. I would recommend a creamy texture that can be mixed with moisturizer and blended on cheeks.”

Do you have a beauty pet peeve?
“I don’t believe in this over-the-top Instagram look, for example. I believe skin should look like skin. As a makeup artist, I like enhancing woman or men’s features and not covering them up.”

What is the number one tip that has helped your skin?
“I am not just saying this: my Vital Skin Foundation has really helped the health of my skin. I developed rosacea in the last couple years, so I created a product that would not only look good on skin, but also improve skin whilst wearing it. I have included a long list of benefits that help with many skincare issues, from coconut oil for hydration to Phytosphingosine to combat redness. It really does help with skin health as well as delivering on the performance of a makeup artist-quality foundation. It’s a win-win.”
