For this season, Creative Director Sarah Burton took Alexander McQueen to the skies. More specifically, the London skies. Held on the roof of Tobacco Docks Yellow Park in Wapping, East London, the 36-look collection was presented under a gigantic bubble-like structure conceived and designed by Chilean architect Smiljan Radic. “I am interested in immersing myself in the environment in which we live and work, in London, and in the elements as we experience them each day,” said Burton. “We moved from water – and the mud on the banks of the Thames – to the sky and the ever-changing, all-encompassing magnificence that represents.” Therefore, while taking in the show, viewers could look up and take in the majesty of the sky above, as well as the London cityscape.

The garments themselves aptly reflected the surrounding environment, as many featured prints of photographs shot from the rooftops of the house’s studio. Burton and her team monitored the weather closely and captured the formation and specific coloration of clouds from daybreak to nightfall in order to get the most dynamic prints possible. One mini dress featured such an image, with a sunset sky being depicted. The bodice reflected a clear blue sky and, as your eyes traveled further towards the hem, the sun descended, and the dress became progressively more yellow. Likewise, a sleeveless black midi dress with a scoop neckline was printed with a photo of dark storm clouds along the hemline.

The collection also featured a myriad of Burton’s classics for the brand. For instance, several midi ballgown-style dresses appeared, paired with leather combat boots. A couple were printed with indigo and white images of the London clouds, while others featured voluminous tulle skirts. Additionally, her beloved embellishments also reappeared on an expertly tailored black suit, a grey blazer and a few of the ballgowns.

Thus, for the Spring/Summer 2022 season, Alexander McQueen melded technology, nature, and fashion for a collection that was both novel and classic. More than this though, the label relinquished part of their design process to the environment, reflecting the lack of ability we have had to dominate nature over the past couple of years. “To give up control and be directly in touch with the unpredictable is to be part of nature,” said Burton. “To see and feel it at its most intense – to be at one with a world that is bigger and more powerful than we are.”
