Return of the 2010s: Skinny Scarves and Arm Socks Are Back for Fall

Fall’s arrival calls for some added warmth… and two unlikely new trends may assist in cozying your look (albeit not so effectively). Re-introducing: the skinny scarf and arm sock. While common opinion agreed on the death of these pieces’ relevancy back in the early 2010s, recent street style and celebrity fashion moments have been making a case for their resurgence.

Let’s time-travel back to prime Y2K, when Legally Blonde had just debuted its sequel and Lizzie McGuire was the pinnacle of style for preteens worldwide. What was everyone wearing? The oh-so-unpractical skinny scarf, obviously. Zero warmth, constant neck-choking tendencies, and for those who really splurged — glitter.

But of course, a more sophisticated sporting of the look was just as prevalent. Kate Moss proudly donned a silk version front row at London Fashion Week in 2004, along with a myriad of other occurrences including a travel moment in 2015. Nobody loved a skinny scarf like Kate Moss.

And it seems as though the dynamic duo of Gen Z style favorites may share her affinity for the spindly accessory. Dua Lipa and Devon Lee Carlson have both been parading the skinny scarf look, the “Levitating” singer even adding a matching top that screams “stylish 2010 tween.” Devon has gone so far as to wear the piece in two separate Instagram posts — likely leading to every skinny scarf available on Depop being sold out.

To add a 2021 spin to skinny scarves, some recent designs feature a more artisanal composition. Mia Regan, a model well-known for her relationship with Victoria Beckham‘s son Romeo, chose patchwork to adorn her skinny scarf. Lindsay Vrckovnik, an Instagram influencer regarded for her knitwear brand favorited by Bella Hadid, wore a ruffled version of the trend.

And what’s the perfect matching accessory for a pure 2000s angst look? Arm socks, essentially leg-warmers for your other limbs. But before approaching any recent applications of the trend, we must pay homage to the arm sock blueprint: Avril Lavigne.

Prior to the Emma Chamberlains and Devon Lee Carlsons of the decade, Avril was flaunting arm socks during guitar solos, and enacting a teen style revolution simultaneously. Regular gloves simply would not have been as practical.

And speaking of Emma, her recent appearances in the arm sock may have quite a bit to do with the trend’s return. For a photoshoot back in April 2021, Emma Chamberlain added a knit pair of arm socks to her look — which led to a surprising air of sophistication. Perhaps leg-warmers for arms are the modern opera glove?

Other influencers and models have worn arm socks as a cozy element beneath outerwear, a chunky knit statement, and even a swimwear accessory. Versatility is another unexpected component of the trend, proving that arm socks are apparently season-proof and applicable to all scales of formality.

On the runway, arm socks and skinny scarves have shockingly been featured on numerous occasions. Ganni showed two looks in their Spring/Summer 2022 at Copenhagen Fashion Week that boasted a skinny scarf ornamentation, while Maison Margiela‘s Spring/Summer 2020 collection displayed an arm candy accent in the very first look. Arm warmers are also currently sold within Maison Margiela’s ready-to-wear line.

So, the final verdict is that two out-of-the-blue Y2K accessories may very well be taking over this Fall. While the trends’ real-life application may not exceed far beyond Gen Z Instagram fashion, it is certainly safe to say that popularity potential exists. Who knows what will be hitting the runway this Fashion Week?
