NYC-based Private Policy, designed by Haoran Li and Siying Qu, presented its Spring/Summer 2022 collection in celebration of the urban garden. Entitled “Urban Plants,” which serve as a life-source and passion for many “city dwellers,” Private Policy wants “to celebrate this ‘green’ trend and present its positive effect on community and mental health.” It’s a thoughtful note for September, which is National Suicide Prevention Month in the U.S.
The up-and-coming genderless and sustainability-focused brand aims to raise conversations about socio-political topics that need attention, where Li and Qu approach the clothing as beauty with substance, and respect its power as a media tool. In the past, consequential issues have informed collections, including self-isolation, beauty and gender standards, race and LGBTQ+ justice, and the designers’ own Asian heritage.
This season, Private Policy is drawing from their own community in New York to discuss mental health. The dynamic city is a natural thread throughout the brand. “Not only does New Yorkers’ style intrigue us, but what they think about and discuss also inspires us,” Qu told Dazed. “We look into current events or social issues, like a newspaper outlet. Finding a topic we are passionate about becomes the starting point for a collection.”
“Let’s be real, being alive is an achievement on its own,” is this season’s message.
“Urban Plants” walked the NYFW runway in calming tones of vivid lilac, sky blue, and soft sage. The looks ranged from colored tights with black mini skirts and dresses, to sheers and mesh adorned with florals, and continued brand signatures of workwear features and harness-style bra tops.
