We see London, we see France… and most importantly for Fendi, we see Rome with the house’s Fall/Winter 2021 couture collection.

Kim Jones’ latest couture collection is an homage to the home of Fendi: he settles in the Eternal City and creates pieces inspired by the landscape around him. All throughout, the Roman inspiration is clear. Mosaic designs and marble-like patterns intertwined with each piece speak to the city full of stone, frescos, marble, and of course, art. The jewelry is even an ode to Rome, formed from Italian marble and paired with looks from this collection ranging from tulle dresses to a jumper.

Working alongside filmmaker Luca Guadagnino and inspired by Roman film director Pier Paolo Pasolini, Jones presents this collection poetically, as he invites the old to meet the new and finds the balance between the two.

“Rome is a fascinating city because it has so many pasts – and I was drawn to Pasolini because I have always been inspired by his vision of the world,” said Jones. “He is something of an outsider in Roman history, but one whose voice remains constant. I have long admired Luca’s work – and, he is someone who, like Pasolini, touches on subjects which are relevant to now.”

Looking at the history of Rome with a modern lens, the marble textures and classic Roman looks of this collection are equally reminiscent of the wardrobe of Roman goddesses and the modern-day woman.

Jones’ couture collection is full of animated garments, from flowing dresses to whimsical evening gowns. The embroidery and beading work puts a modern take on a classic look on these pieces. Meanwhile, there are statuesque coats and finely tailored suits to balance out the looks. These strong silhouettes are further balanced by a few glittery looks and some delicately embroidered lace mini dresses to take the collection fully from day to night.

As Jones created this collection, he wanted to note the cultural crossroads of Ancient Rome, the place that long existed as the center of the world. He wanted to honor the city’s past while looking to its revitalized future and reflect that via a diverse cast of models.

“At the time, it was the center of the world,” says Jones. “I wanted to include all of the people who would have inhabited it then, as well as now.”

All roads lead to Rome, but we want to take the road that leads us to Fendi’s Rome.
