Make sure your phone is nearby, because you never know when the next Gossip Girl blast will hit….Instagram?

You heard us right. If you haven’t seen the HBO reboot of Gossip Girl, now you know: our favorite secret spiller has left the blog behind in 2007 in favor of a brand new Instagram account, complete with the little blue check so you know it really is GG in the flesh. Adam Chanler-Berat who plays Constance teacher Jordan Glassberg quips when looking through the old Gossip Girl website archives, “it’s a blog…haven’t seen one of these in years. Last post? Nine years ago.” The show takes place in post-pandemic 2021, so the fact that we’ve evolved beyond a simple blog feels fitting to this particular reboot.

The Constance student body’s most popular friend group isn’t just checking Instagram to keep tabs on the mysterious new Gossip Girl, either — Queen Bee (not B!) Julien Calloway is a big deal on social media and her posse of close friends are also seen doubling as both PR team. Her influencer status even lands her a spot walking in the Christopher John Rogers show, because what’s a Gossip Girl episode without teenagers in fashion shows like it’s just another day in the life? Social media is clearly the way this new generation of Constance students and teachers keep up with both each other and the day-to-day happenings of Julien’s gang.

Not only that but all of the photos that Tavi Gevinson’s Kate Keller posts to @gossipgirl can live right in your home feed. Each juicy blast that we witness Miss Keller type out is available for your viewing pleasure on the official @gossipgirl Instagram account. You can even text Gossip Girl (aka sign up for texts straight to your phone!) at the number in her Instagram bio.

More interested in the lives of New York’s elite teens than the rumors that swirl around them? Julien (@juliencalloway), Monet (@monetdehaan), Luna (@lunalaaaaaa), Max (@maxtheewolfe), Audrey (@audreyhopesfor), and Akeno (@akimenz) all have real accounts that you can follow on Instagram to feel user-immersed in the world of the Gossip Girl reboot. After all, what’s an influencer without the pics to prove it?

Mindlessly tapping on Instagram as you wait for the MTA to arrive has just a little more gotten interesting as each Gossip Girl episode is accompanied by outfit pics, selfies, and Easter eggs that are hints for the next week’s episode if you look closely enough. You can catch up on the most recent episode, pop onto Instagram, and see @juliencalloway’s cozy photo with Obie on your phone for the most immersive Gossip Girl viewing experience. A quick glance at Julien’s Instagram reveals that she fields all PR inquiries to Monet, her right hand when it comes to all things social media — the info that these accounts provide will make you feel like a Constance student yourself (minus the coffee spilling, the parent drama, and what we assume is an insane cost of attendance).

Both a marketing strategy on the show’s part and a gift to diehard fans who can’t get enough of the new generation of Manhattan’s elite, these Instagram accounts are an indicator that the producers of this reboot are surprisingly succeeding in an area that many shows that revolve around social media have not entirely succeeded in. It’s hard to capture the full essence of platforms that serve such different functions based on age, demographic, city, country, etc, but it’s clear that Gossip Girl understands the demographic that she wants — the Gen Z digital natives who wouldn’t be caught dead without their phones and a few good bars of cell service. It’s a far cry from the accidental overnight influencers and the usage of under-researched text abbreviations of other teen shows, a nod to the responsibility that comes with rebooting such an iconic show.

The format that Gossip Girl now follows is also a nod to the accounts dedicated to celebrity gossip. Arguably the most notable of all is Deux Moi, a pop culture account that posts insider tips and gossip on Instagram. Deux Moi is often compared to the OG Gossip Girl for the format, anonymity, and that they never claim to post fact but often are completely, entirely correct. You can even sign up for texts from Deux Moi that go out like Gossip Girl blasts, and now the new Gossip Girl follows the same format. We do love a full circle moment at CR, and it’s feeling as if GG knows exactly what she’s doing this time around. Keep scrolling for a sneak peek at our favorite Instagram posts…

Gossip Girl (2021) can be streamed on HBO. New episodes come out weekly, every Thursday.
