After almost two years living without the sass and style of everyone’s favorite high schoolers, Euphoria is officially back and by the looks of it better than ever.
Production (round two) for the highly anticipated second season began April 5, and the cast and crew have finally begun sharing exclusive looks into their secret world and the Euphoria sized gap in our hearts is slowly being filled. The HBO series originally began production in March of 2020 but ultimately got shut down due to the pandemic—with not even a single rhinestone in sight. Tear. And while sighs of disappointment were heard round the globe by saddened fans, that just meant that they had an entire year to perfect the already impeccable makeup, wardrobe, soundtrack, and script even more than before.
While the cast has remained hush-hush about this coming season, CR’s Issue 18 cover star, Barbie Ferreira, managed to give us an exclusive tidbit, all about the juicy second season. Ferreira, who plays Kat Hernandez, the fanfiction writer turned cam girl first revealed what the process is like to morph into their beloved characters.
It all starts with a meeting with Euphoria creator Sam Levinson. Every season each cast member meets with Levinson for a heartfelt one-on-one. When we met with Ferreira, she had just completed her session with him for season two and she admitted sharing her feelings and experiences with Sam came pretty naturally. “I would tell him about all the things I felt growing up and like feeling fat, insecure, ugly, all,” the actress says. “So a lot of my past and being made fun of by people, just a lot of small things that were really personal went in [to the show] and I think that’s what makes the show so great is that we put in so much of our personal. And then Sam is great. By episode six he like knew how to write in our voices. Like you could hear us saying it. It’s like eerie because he molds the characters to us, not the other way around. And I think what usually happens is you have a character and you have to be it. He was kind of like… It was very open-ended who the characters were.”
And this adaptive nature isn’t just reserved for the script, but for the costume department as well. Costume Designer Heidi Bivens apparently pulls wardrobe from the characters’ real-life counterparts—while of course making sure to give them a bit of a twist. Barbie told us her favorite shirt, a graphic tee of Frankenstein smoking a cigarette, was featured in a scene as well as her real glasses. But Bivens was sure to Kat-ify everything. Ferreira says “Heidi would get like the leather and the latex and then maybe pick something out of my closet and say let’s make this for you in a different way but in the same shape and size and everything and make it better.”
As we all know the Euphoria cast is notorious for having the best style on and off screen, so with the wardrobe being in the hands of Emmy-award winner Heidi Bivens and the cast of fashion icons, we know we’re in for a treat.
So the real question we all have in mind is what can we expect from this next season? How could it possibly top the viral cultural phenomenon that was season one? Well apparently it’s going to do just that. Barbie tells us, “you thought season one was going for it, we’re gonna go for it in season two. It’s gonna be fun. It’s weird because I think we… not played it safe… but played it… I just think season two is gonna be even more rambunctious and like in-depth and more fantastical and trippy and all that good stuff.”
And by the looks of it, the cast and crew is loving this next phase for the series. Like a family returning home after a long vacation, social media is filled with the cast as happy and as proud as can be to be back on set. The cast features a few new friendly faces for the second season, including Actress Rowan Blanchard who has fit right into the Euphoria gang. Zendaya posted to her story various photos around set with the caption “just being back here in general…missed it.” Eagled eyed fans also might have spotted Maude Apatow who plays Lexi and Jacob Elordi aka Nate’s trailer mirror selfies.
Our heart really stopped though when cast member Sydney Sweeney shared a snapshot of Makeup Artist’s Doniella Davy’s massive “glitter bible.” Now we know it was just the sides of the binders, but still, imagine all the swoon-worthy makeup looks just waiting for us to put on our mood-board.
TikTok has also become a space for the Euphoria cast to let loose. Ferreira gave us an inside look into what an early morning on set “getting ready to pop pu$ $y” looks like. Hint it involves a Starbucks coffee, a humidifier, Alexa Demie’s toaster, and a Hello Kitty pimple patch.
Thanks to a series of videos Demie’s younger sister, Falize Romé, posted on her TikTok account we also got to get our first look into Maddy 2.0. The duo can be seen dancing in her trailer to Nicki Minaj’s “Roman Revenge”, twerking to an Enya remix, and reciting Maddy’s iconic “molly” line from the show — the actress wearing a pair of oversized gold hoops with the name “Maddy” customized on them.
A better view of the accessory could be spotted on Demie’s Instagram story which looked to be paired alongside a matching nameplate necklace and a gold cross chain. With how perfect these accessories are, we can only imagine how show-stopping the matching outfits will be.
While no further details regarding the wardrobe have been released, Bivens did mention that the costume crew is “going to push it a lot further for all the characters in season two.” The cast themselves also seem to have taken part in the design process with Bivens mentioning “the cast all have such great instincts about their characters and costumes; they’re always texting me with ideas or sending me references on social media.”
In the meantime we hope these serotonin-boosting social media posts keep on coming; until then, we can only imagine what trippy dream is yet to come.
