Angela Missoni Steps Down As Missoni’s Creative Director

The coronavirus brought a wave of changes across the fashion world and its initial impact is still ruling the course of major houses still today, one of them being Italian house and family jewel Missoni.
Today, the houses’s chief executive officer Livio Proli announced that Angela Missoni, the daughter of founders Rosita and Ottavio Missoni, has decided to step down from her 24 year long run as Missoni’s creative director. However, Missoni will take the role as president while Alberto Caliri, who has worked with Missoni for 12 years as design director, will fill the position temporarily. Caliri’s first collection for Missoni will focus on spring 2022 (fashion calendar time) and will show in September.
This decision is part the house’s five-year plan for repositioning, which deemed necessary after the coronavirus pandemic. In an interview with WWD, Proli revealed the Caliri will be tasked with reaching a younger audience both in age (targeted to Millennials) and in lifestyle and will begin crafting entry price products that “…will continue to be positioned in the luxury range…” and “still be of the highest quality”.
Missoni joins a growing list of creative directors who have stepped down this year. April saw Paul Andrew and Felipe Oliveira Baptista step down from their creative director roles from Salvatore Ferragamo and Kenzo respectively while Nicholas Glass, previous creative director of Kate Spade, left the company as it shifted its branding efforts in March.
In the past few years fashion has noticed the immense need to adjust to the growing technological landscape, an initiative that was fueled even mores by the pandemic. While it will be interesting see where Caliri takes the long time namesake reigned brand, it will also reflect just how much heritage houses are grasping at new consumer strategies in the digital realm and the ever-changing definition of fashion within it.
