Earth Day was only a month ago, but efforts to sustain the environment is still on fashion’s mind.

This week, Tom Ford and 52HZ officially opened submissions for the Tom Ford Plastic Innovation Prize, a sustainable initiative and two year long competition that invites creatives and entrepreneurs to craft alternatives to thin-film plastic. The candidates will be selected by an established panel of judges from all arenas including Tom Ford himself, Stella McCartney, Livia Firth, Trudie Styler, Don Cheadle, and Susan Rockefeller who are in charge of evaluating submissions based on scale and how market-ready ideas will be by 2025. Those who design the best alternative (which, according to the Plastic Prize page, entails a material that can be “used in poly bags… to single-use, reusable sandwich and storage bags”) will win .2 million.

Environmentally conscious projects aren’t a first for the American label. Last November (the same month the label announced the Tom Ford Plastic Innovation Prize) the designer created a watch completely made out of ocean plastic. This year long initiative will only push the eco message further.

Submissions will be open from today through October 24, 2021 and the guidelines and rules are available at www.plasticprize.org.
