Gucci is celebrating their 100th year anniversary with the most ambitious crossover event in history: Gucci x Balenciaga.

The Fall/Winter collection debuted in a film entitled, “Aria,” earlier today with a not-so-surprisingly equestrian flair. One of Gucci’s past campaigns, “Of Course A Horse,” starred five gorgeous horses and their human friends in adventurous, endearing scenarios to promote the SS20 collection.

“Aria” showed a sense of fashion-forward and idyllic freedom post-pandemic. Enjoying the great outdoors without confines and looking stylish while doing it.

Creative Director Alessandro Michele wanted to honor the equestrian mythology and heritage of the brand, and he does this well. Riding helmets, leatherwork, and harnesswear are incorporated throughout the show and it perfectly represents Michele’s penchant for retro, antique, and almost campy style. If Michele is going to honor the history of Gucci, he’s going to do it in his own way, “I have celebrated the equestrian world of Gucci transfiguring it into a fetish cosmogony; I have sublimated Marilyn Monroe’s silhouette and old Hollywood’s glamour; I sabotaged the discreet charm of the bourgeoisie and the codes of men’s tailoring,” he explains.

What brings this 100th-year collection to another level is dear old friend, Balenciaga. If you’re surprised by this collaboration, maybe you shouldn’t be. Michele speaks about his attitude towards design for Gucci, “In this sense, Gucci becomes for me a hacking lab, made of incursions and metamorphoses. An alchemical factory of contaminations where everything connects to anything. A place where thefts and explosive reactions happen: a permanent generator of sparkles and unpredictable desires.”

Michele is right about unpredictable desires – this collection is something we didn’t know we wanted. The collaboration sings precisely because the codes of the houses feel so distinct. The French label adds a modern edginess to Gucci Fw21 that we haven’t seen in some time. Sleek blazers with “Balenciaga” and “Gucci” printed all over, crystal embroidered dresses, and high-waisted feathered pants are dead giveaways of Balenciaga’s influence on the collection. In collaboration with Balenciaga, Gucci FW20 becomes dynamic, unapologetically glamorous, and visually compelling.
