There’s nothing quite like a good purse. They’re often a statement piece — a way to express personality while also being a unique and outward status symbol. Handbags have been instrumental in defining brands’ reputations, with iconic bags making for iconic brands. Givenchy is no stranger to creating iconic handbags. The Givenchy Antigona is one of the brand’s most iconic and timeless bags, with designs like the Pandora and Horizon also solidifying themselves as classics.

Once again, Givenchy is presenting a new handbag: the 4G. Creative Director Matthew M. Williams debuted this bag in the Givenchy Pre-Fall 2021 collection, and it immediately caught attention, indicating it may be added to the ranks of iconic bags alongside the Antigona and other Givenchy creations. One of the most defining themes of the house is the rotational, quadruple “G,” and Williams implements that logo for the 4G. He uses it to provide a fresh take on the iconic emblem while preserving the symmetry of the design that Hubert de Givenchy prized so deeply. This fresher take reflects the clean, crisp aesthetics that have become synonymous with Williams’ Givenchy.

The bag also symbolizes Williams’ take on Givenchy with its use of hardware. In Williams’ debut Spring/Summer 2021 collection, there was a focus on metals and padlocks that can be seen in the new 4G bag as well. The utilitarian yet luxurious nature of the hardware echoes the bag itself: while a classic rectangular handbag is functional, the 4G is simultaneously sleek, elegant, and versatile.

The 4G comes in two styles, a flap bag and a chain bag, to blend that luxury and versatility. It can be taken from day to night and used as a clutch, shoulder, or crossbody style bag: the 4G flap bag comes with a removable strap that can be adjusted via discreet metal brackets, while the chain bag features the house’s new G-link chain in silver or gold-finished metal. The bags include main compartments and flat pockets for storing cards and are available in an assortment of colors, from neutrals like black, ivory, and beige to trendy colors like avocado green and baby pink. The bags will also be made in special finishes, along with patent leather, snake-printed lambskin, and python finishes.

The Givenchy 4G handbag by Matthew M. Williams will debut in stores on May 1, 2021.
