In between relentless chaos and sweatsuit fit-pics consuming the world around us, last year’s trends were left on the back burner. With no expectations to go out whatsoever, there wasn’t a need to follow the ebb and flow of fashion’s trend seasons.

However, with a vaccine on the horizon and a newfound appreciation for an occasion that calls for real pants, 2021’s trends are more alive than ever.

Whale Tails

First worn by burlesque dancers in the 1930s, then by Paris Hilton in the mid-2000s, the exposed thong trend has always been risqué. Named after the T-shape created by the underwear silhouette contrasting with a nearly-bare behind, whale tails are the perfect way to spice up a pair of low-rise jeans.

Oversized Platform Shoes

Perfect to wear when stepping over your enemies, lug-soled shoes are 2021’s creeping trend. Gen-Z and millennials’ fashionable dolls growing up may have paved the way for the recent resurgence in chunky boots, loafers, and platforms.

While designer-driven penny loafers and combat boots can be found on the soles of nearly every influencer today, Baby Spice ran so the Insta girlies could walk.

In the ’90s, the Spice Girls popularized exaggerated sneakers when they wore Buffalo London platforms. The British footwear company has found it’s footing in the 21st century with this generation’s e-girls and e-boys, proving itself a staple among statement shoes.

Faux Fur

What was once seen as tasteless and tacky is the hottest environmental trend today.

Over the last decade, established designers have decided to ditch cruelty-riddled garments as a way to embrace sustainability and ethical practices in the fashion world. While faux fur isn’t exactly the most conscious, often using harmful manufacturing practices, the material provides a cruelty-free alternative compared to real fur.

Technicolor fur-trimmed coats by Danish design duo Saks Potts are all the rage thanks to starlets like Jessica Alba and Kendall Jenner. Although not faux, the coats provide a springboard for styles focusing on fun colors and textures. An alternative? A faux fur bucket hat. The eponymous Gen Z accessory is now a standard indy-kid uniform thanks to funk fashion royalty like Tyler the Creator and FKA Twigs.

Motorcycle Fashion

Edgelords, rejoice.

This hard-line, motto-style of gothic imagery has been a fan favorite among hype beasts and models off-duty. Brands like Chrome Hearts and Ed Hardy have had a recent resurgence in the last few months with embellished details and hardline leather making a major comeback. The house recently launched their iconic Lowrider glasses that double as a chic look and functional motorcycle eyewear, a nod to founder Richard Stark’s love of motorcycles. Edgy jewelry, perfectly tacky trucker hats and effortless rock-and-roll je ne sais quoi are in our cards for 2021.

Fuzzy Bags

Your purse gets cold too you know.

After exploding on TikTok in the middle of last year, it looks like furry bags are here to stay.

Similar to a tote bag, these fuzzy purses are a simple throw-and-go bag, an endless pit of old receipts, melted gum sticks ,and several hair ties. Like 2020, this coming year is all about functionality (with a few exceptions) so why not have a bag that reflects that?

Fuzzy bags were seen all over runways of Fall/Winter collections past, proving the trend came long before the e-girls. For a refined look, neutral colors and hints of shearling are the way to go.

Arm Socks

While 2020’s opera glove trend may live on the catwalk, arm warmers live in the hearts of 2005 Myspace girls.

In an era of lockdown-fueled nostalgia longing for eons past, 2021 is proving to be the year of scene style. Arm socks, similar to leg warmers, are a questionably cute accessory to spice up any outfit. Maybe your wrists are cold? Maybe you’re covering up a burn from your hair crimper? Maybe you just want to feel 13 again? Either way, this comfy, cool trend is sure to make its rounds among the industries’ babydoll tee-wearing it-girls.

Wrapped Silhouettes

String cheese, but make it fashion.

Inspired by the fringe-filled ’20s, wrapping has become a massive statement technique dominating footwear and clothing. Just a few short years ago, tying strappy heels above your pants was all the rage. The look, worn by the likes of Emily Ratajkowski and Kylie Jenner, has now evolved to a completely wrapped look. By nipping the waist and giving the illusion of length, labels like TLZ L’Femme and Hyein Seo have been experimenting with exaggerated fringe accents.

Mesh Tops

At this point, it’s a given that the younger generation of fashion-obsessed internet kids would stumble upon Jean-Paul Gaultier and his archives.

Although fashion’s enfant terrible retired from fashion exactly a year ago, that hasn’t prevented his signature sheer pieces from making a comeback in recent months.

Supermodel Kendall Jenner has been spotted wearing Gaultier’s iconic ’90s mesh separates– a staple among his signature collections. Striking patterns and abstract photographs make up the printed designs on the designer’s garments. If Depop, the internet’s trendiest second-hand clothing selling platform, is any indication, the archival renaissance is here to stay.
