On Joe Biden’s Inauguration day in Washington D.C., Bernie Sanders became an internet sensation via meme. The socially distanced Vermont Politician wore his mask, hand-knitted mittens, a black suit jacket, black trousers, and a coat from Vermont- based label Burton casually protecting himself from both COVID-19 and the freezing winter morning. Outshining a range of fashion heavyweights from Michelle Obama in Sergio Hudson to Jennifer Lopez in Chanel, Sanders’ minimalistic fashion choice strangely drew more attention than any of the other looks.

It’s Sander’s approach of Vermont fashion as noted by his wife, Jane O’Meara Sanders, tweeting, “Vermont jacket, Vermont gloves, Vermont common sense!” with Sanders being as comfortable as he can be. Essential fashion has been on-trend during the pandemic where loungewear and comfort fashion has dominated the fashion scene with comfortable sneakers, slippers, and sweats during the lockdown. Aside from many Americans not buying into fashion as much as they used to, it’s about reusing what they have which is exactly what Sanders did by relying on a basic style. He is proving the timeless fashion statement, “you only need one really good coat” fact as he wore the same coat during a presidential campaign in Utah last March. Sanders looked like he had more to do after Biden’s special day, which reflects the attitude of many of us who haven’t made the effort to change any of our outfits throughout the day. During the pandemic, it’s the same outfit from day to night when we mix in working from home, zoom meetings, online class, and other errands around the neighborhood. The US senator’s simplistic and unborthered fashion choices feels relatable, like our own fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and friends during this time.

The white, brown, and black cross striped mittens Sander’s rocked were sewn by a Vermont teacher, Jen Ellis who sent Sanders the mittens made from repurposed wool from sweaters with fleece lining with recycled plastic bottles. This goes in line with the business messages of support during the pandemic, where we are promoted to support small businesses. Made with care and sustainability, Sanders made a conscious choice for the public to do the same. To help out their local communities and brands who do take the steps towards saving the planet.

Sanders commented on his fashion choice on CBS News, “You know, in Vermont … we know something about the cold. We’re not so concerned about good fashion, we want to keep warm. And that’s what I did today.”

The cross-legged, cross-mittened Inauguration pose had Bernie travel back in time through art, film, paparazzi moments, album covers, and video games all over the internet. The online sensation of Sanders has made the world smile, leaving room for the fullest imagination. The internet left no shortage of comedic, sentimental, and crafty scenarios with Bernie’s appearance.

According to the internet, the relaxed style of a coat, trousers, and mittens go with every occasion. You can score a high-end lookalike to Sanders with a Stone Island Micro Reps Jacket, Givenchy Eyeglasses, Church Consul shoes, Lanvin Brown Striped Gloves, Acronym Trouser Pants, and Disposable Face Masks if you’re unwilling to ditch maximalism for minimalism.

Thanks to Sanders, it looks like we’ll be scoring some trendy homemade mittens from crafty small businesses on Etsy. Or you can score a pair from Jen Ellis on Twitter.

If you love the meme and the Bernie Sanders campaign, the unisex “Chairman Sanders Crewneck” from the Bernie Campaign Store retails for , where this made in USA sweatshirt will donate 100% of the proceeds towards Meals on Wheels Vermont.
