What is the future for Givenchy? The new creative director of the French luxury giant did not hesitate to find an answer for the house. Following the see-now-buy-now shopping methods of today’s audiences, after just 90 days, Matthew Williams is debuting his first collection for the House amid the Spring/Summer 2021 season. Just in time for the holiday season, Givenchy is unveiling a “teaser” capsule of clothes and accessories, a curated selection from Williams’ first collection for online and Givenchy’s Miami Boutique.

As expected, Williams’ unapologetic penchant for hardware from his streetwear label 1017 Alyx 19SM is translated effortlessly onto the teaser collection: covetable chains, metal, and chrome can be seen in many of the capsule’s pieces. And within, the House’s iconic 4G emblem is reprised across wardrobe staples. Furthermore, in a step towards ultra-technicality, Williams invented an array of machine-inspired prints for tees and shirts donning 3D chain-embossed details, disintegrated “GIVENCHY” letterings, and variant renditions of locks and eyelets.

But with a playful and slightly subversive take on deconstruction and shapes, Williams includes something for everyone in the teaser collection, for every occasion. For women, the capsule’s directional pieces boast an indulgence of impeccable tailoring as seen in the long fitted blazer and the high-rise trouser. Textured denim also shines throughout the capsule, finished with bold, glossy details in deluxe casual outerwear such as the jacket with soft 4G logo denim jacquard, the lightweight long coat in crocodile-print, and the also voluminous croc-print leather urban Windbreaker.

For men, the teaser collection’s statement pieces make their premieres in a stride towards the spontaneous urban spirits of the new Givenchy, embroidered with reimagined Givenchy insignia. Among them, the single-breasted jacket overlaid with 4G crest and the classic-fit trouser are emblazoned with subtle original metallic details. The boxy shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, and the oversized parka in technical ottoman all concretize the functionality and refinement of a new Givenchy, now reigned by the fashion technician that is Matthew Williams.

Ending with a note on reinvention and the trompe l’oeil renderings of hardware, Williams has developed discrete gadget features exclusively for the capsule in its essential pieces. The signature Antigona handbag is now updated with dual Givenchy signatures, longer handles, and a “4G” padlock. Footwear such as the Lock ankle boot with a padlock ankle strap and men’s GIV 1 high-performance sneaker offer a finishing touch to the hardware craving. And last but not least, accessories including chain necklaces, statement-making flat cap with devilish horns, and the black leather belt with a G-chain buckle round out Williams’ debut.

The Givenchy Teaser capsule collection is now available online.
