British label Burberry has officially become the first luxury fashion house to offer PPE face masks, with 20 percent of the sales proceeds going to the Burberry Foundation COVID-19 Community Fund. The masks boast Burberry’s signature vintage check pattern and will be available in “Archive Beige” or “Pale Blue” colorways.
Sustainably produced from excess fabrics and enhanced with antimicrobial technology (that means it’s the real deal), each mask also comes with a matching travel pouch. The use of revalued fabrics marks a continuation in sustainability efforts following the launch of ReBurberry Edit, a collection of looks from the house’s Spring/Summer 2020 show that were re-created with sustainable materials.
This release is only Burberry’s most recent foray into COVID-19 support efforts. In March, the fashion house announced that it would repurpose its Yorkshire trench coat factory to produce non-surgical gowns and masks for patients in UK hospitals, including 100,000 masks for doctors and nurses of the National Health Service. Burberry also donated to the University of Oxford’s vaccine development efforts, which entered its final phase of trials in July, and to English food supply charities like FareShare and The Felix Project.
Burberry has not announced a release date, but the masks will be available for 8 exclusively online.
