Fans of the hit HBO show Euphoria were devastated when, in mid-March, production for the show’s Season Two were forced to halt due to the pandemic. Although there won’t be any new Euphoria episodes for the foreseeable future, collaborations between creator Sam Levinson and star Zendaya continue on. During the lockdown, Levinson quietly worked with the actress, John David Washington, and a small camera crew to film a brand-new feature film, Malcom & Marie.
The filming of Malcom & Marie reportedly took place from June 17 to July 2, at Carmel, California’s Caterpillar House. With measures such as minimal physical contact, a two-week quarantine in the Monterrey filming location, and pre-production COVID-19 tests, the cast and crew were in complete compliance with recommended safety protocols. The film, which stars Zendaya alongside Tenet and BlacKkKlansman star Washington, is reported to thematically echo Noah Baumbach’s movie Marriage Story, while simultaneously exploring issues within the current social climate. The release date and other details are still under wraps, but Zendaya sparked excitement with a non-disclosing Instagram post with costar Washington.
Malcom and Marie is the first known feature film that’s managed to complete production since the pandemic hit, and depending on its announced release, might also be the first feature film to debut amidst the continued COVID-19 restrictions. Levinson’s new style of adapting production to current safety requirements also sparks a conversation about how the film industry can adapt to these new protocols. With the implementation of never-before-seen measures—actors and actresses dressing and micing themselves, allowing no more than 12 people on set at a time—the completion of the film proves the industry’s ability to adjust. Depending on the film’s success, Malcom & Marie might be an exciting and promising new step in the foreseeable future of film.
