Thom Browne unveils his own creative solution to a pandemic runway show: a collaborative short film made with singer Moses Sumney, housed on the Paris Fashion Week men’s digital platform. The project gives just a glimpse of Browne’s Spring/Summer 2021 collection, with only one garment modeled in the video. Sumney wears a long sequined skirt with an intarsia stripe, standing on a pedestal and setting the tone for the Olympics-inspired collection.
Browne’s project is not a replacement to the current menswear showings, but instead a precursor to the full coed Spring/Summer 2021 collection that will take place during the women’s fashion week schedule in early October.
Together, Sumney and Browne explore the relationship between athleticism, pageantry, and concepts of gender. Sumney himself scored the film and placed the Olympic Hymn at the center of the work. Translated into multiple languages, the sound encourages viewers to consider how physical experiences can transcend preconceived cultural barriers.
The video also reveals an exciting development for the brand: an upcoming limited-edition collaboration with Beats by Dr. Dre that will benefit a charitable organization. Specific details will be revealed at a later date.
Browne’s work has often used inventive silhouettes to explore the constructed notions of gender; for Spring/Summer 2020 the designer put male models in tutus and ballet flats, hoop skirts, and even football helmets. During the same show Browne gave models padded exaggerated hips and jock straps, forcing the audience to question the body’s relationship to athletic performance. This is, after all, coming from one of the designers who redefined menswear with the skinny suit in the early 2000s.
