Palais Galliera, the fashion museum of Paris, will christen its reopening with a dedication to the iconoclastic designer Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel. The exhibition was originally meant to open this April, but with building renovations coinciding with the French lockdown due to COVID-19, postponement was the only option. Set to run from October 1, 2020 to March 14, 2021, Gabrielle Chanel. A Fashion Manifesto will be comprised of over 350 pieces from Chanel from the early 1910s to 1971.

Curated by the Director of the Palais Galliera Miren Arzalluz and Collection Curator Véronique Belloir, the retrospective was artistically directed by fashion historian Olivier Saillard, all with the support of the Chanel brand. The pieces in the exhibition have been gathered from the museum’s personal collections, Chanel’s archives, and loans from private collectors and institutions like the de Young Museum in San Francisco, Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the MoMu in Antwerp, and the Museo de la Moda in Santiago in Chile.

Walking us through Chanel’s personal evolution, the exhibit will begin chronologically, with her early days as a milliner, showcasing a straw hat created by the trailblazing designer. Piece by piece, the exhibition will progress with her groundbreaking silhouettes of the 1920s and 1930s. Additionally, a special room will be specifically dedicated to the 1921 creation of the Chanel No. 5 perfume.

After the timeline, collections will be paired off into themes, with all of the various tweed suits, 2.55 quilted handbags, two-tone heels, and costume and fine jewelry throughout the years, which have defined the enduring label. Ten portraits of the indelible designer will represent the 10 different branches of the retrospective, illustrating how the founder and the brand are one in the same.

The expansive exhibition will cover 16,150 square feet of the Palais Galliera including the museum’s new basement showrooms, of which the Chanel brand exclusively sponsored for permanent collections. The basement galleries will be graced with the name, “The Gabrielle Chanel Rooms,” and will be open to the public all year long, illustrating the history of fashion from the 18th century to modern day.
