Hats Off to Bella Abzug on Her Birthday

START

Bella Abzug is without a doubt, an unsung feminist hero. The Jewish, Bronx-raised three-term lawyer and congresswoman broke a multitude of glass-ceilings for generations to come, all beneath her iconic wide-brimmed hats. A staunch supporter of women’s liberation, the anti-war advocate and civil-rights activist worked vigorously to abolish oppressive systems and provide more sustainable opportunities for women and people of color. The spitfire legislator was recently portrayed by Margo Martindale in FX’s hit miniseries Mrs. America, illustrating the long and strenuous battle to enact the Equal Rights Amendment along with her fellow feminist champions Gloria Steinem, Shirley Chisholm, and Betty Friedan. On what would have been the 100th birthday of “Battling Bella,” CR explores Abzug’s significant contributions to the Women’s Liberation Movement and her penchant for eye-catching millinery as loud as her rallying cries.
